Magnum Photos

Two years after Second World War was founded the world's most prestigious photographic agency. It was formed by four photographers – Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David „Chim". Now is is most well-known cooperative agency with offices in London, Paris, Tokyo and New York with members from all over the world. To become a member is a great honor for any photographer.

Lector of the workshop Chien-Chi Chang is a Taiwanese photographer and member of the Magnum Photos agency. In his work, he makes manifest the abstract concepts of alienation and connection. “The Chain,” a collection of portraits made in a mental asylum in Taiwan, caused a sensation when it was shown at La Biennale di Venezia (2001) and the Bienal de Sao Paolo (2002). The shocking, nearly life-sized photographs of pairs of patients literally chained together resonate with Chang’s jaundiced look at the less visible bonds of marriage. He has treated marital ties in two books—I do I do I do (2001), a collection of images depicting alienated grooms and brides in Taiwan, and in Double Happiness (2005), a brutal depiction of the business of selling brides in Vietnam. The ties of family and of culture are also the themes of an ambitious project begun in 1992. For 21 years, Chang has photographed and videoed the bifurcated lives of Chinese immigrants in New York’s Chinatown, along with those of their wives and families back home in Fujian. Still a work in progress, “China Town” was hung at the National Museum of Singapore in 2008 as part of a mid-career survey and at La Biennale di Venezia (2011) as well as at International Center of Photography, New York (2012). Chang’s investigation of the ties that bind one person to another draws on his own deeply divided immigrant experience in the United States. The 2-day intensive multimedia workshop is aimed at professionals and serious photography enthusiasts who aspire to improve their story telling to a higher ground by combining photographs, moving images and sound. The participants (12 maximum) should arrive at the workshop with at least 80% of their editing materials ready i.e. photographs, audio clips, video clips, documents. The workshop focuses on video story telling skills and helps you define your own visual story telling style via multimedia. By the end of the workshop each participant is required to present a oneminute multimedia.

The realization of a relationship between the photographer and the photographed lies in four scenarios;

1) how the photographer perceives his/her subject

2) how the subject perceives himself/herself

3) how the subject wishes to be perceived in front of a camera

4) the photographer's ability to transfer his/her perception via a camera

The 2-day Workshop consists of the following

A: Visual Exercises

Workshop participants are required to bring their camera and laptop for the class. It´s an exercise to heighten individual’s understanding of photography and oneself.

B: Portfolio Critique

It is unique opportunity for participants – they are expected to bring their portfolio for an one-on-one portfolio review and critique.

C: Multi-media

We will review short film and Magnum in Motion pieces and the story, video editing process behind each piece. In this workshop, the participants are expected to photograph and be photographed under the most demanding conditions through visual exercises. The goal is to achieve a deeper understanding of oneself and to liberate a photographer's vision.
