Starting your carrier as a photographer? Looking for techniques to improve your skills in self-promotion as an artist?
Ready to take your practice to a new level?

Month of Photography Bratislava invites you to take part at a unique workshop focused particularly on effective self-promotion in today’s competitive marketplace. Its lecturer Saul Robbins (NYC, USA) is himself an active artist, having been exhibited and published internationally, and a finalist of various awards. At the end of this workshop, students will have clear ideas about how to better refine their portfolios, and a multitude of strategies to promote themselves and their work with confidence, clarity, and insight into the value of articulating an “authentic brand” that permeates all aspects of one’s practice.

Lecturer of the workshop Saul Robbins is interested in the ways people interact with their surroundings, and the

psychological dynamics of intimacy. His photographs are motivated by observations of

human behavior and personal experience, especially those related to loss and unity. Robbins

has been exhibited and published internationally and is best known for the series Initial

Intake, examining the empty chairs of Manhattan-based psychotherapy professionals from

their clients’ perspective.

The topic and aims of the masterclass

Professional development is as important to one's practice as making the work itself. The

objectives of this workshop are to increase students' knowledge, skills, and confidence when

preparing themselves and their photographs for promotion to various venues - juried calls,

portfolio reviews, individual meetings, - and to create individualized action plans that remain

focused and effective in today's competitive marketplace. Discussions and assignments

address editing and adding to a portfolio for maximum creative impact; creating manageable

and executable Action Plans; refining an "elevator pitch" for effective introductions and

networking; editing statements, bios, CVs, and cover letters; designing eye-catching materials:

business cards, mailers, and leave behinds; email campaigns, websites, SEO; personalizing

strategies for optimal task organization and management; researching appropriate venues and

opportunities; securing and preparing for meetings and presentations; and, most importantly,

following up effectively. By the end of this workshop, students will have clear ideas about how

best to refine their portfolios, and a multitude of strategies to promote themselves and their work

with confidence, clarity, and insight into the value of articulating an "authentic brand" that

permeates all aspects of one's practice.

Students should bring as concise an edit of their work as possible, (20 images from 1-2 portfolios, ideally prints rather than jpegs) and any marketing and self promotion materials they are already using, such as business cards, Leave-Behinds, Mailers, etc.
